The solar wind conditions have been moderately elevated since UTC noon on Dec 03,
possibly related to an anticipated high speed-stream arrival from a re-current
negative polarity coronal hole (SIDC 140), which crossed the central meridian on Nov
30. The impact might be enhanced by a possible glancing blow from a partial halo
coronal mass ejection (CME) which erupted near the east limb on Dec 01 related to an
X1.9 flaring from SIDC Sunspot Group 687/NOAA AR 4299. The solar wind velocity has
remained below 500 km/s. The magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field has
increased to 18.5 nT and the has reached a minimum of -15.4 nT. As a result a
moderate geomagnetic storm was registered locally over Belgium between 19 and 21 UTC
on Dec 03 and the NOAA planetary Kp values are likely to register moderate to strong
geomagnetic storm levels in the upcoming hours.
