SUMER at MSSL : Gradschool Images Competition

There is a Research Images Competition organized by UCL Graduate School.

I made three suggestions based on SUMER studies:

We agreed to select the third one for the competition and entered it with the following title and explanation (Carl helped me with the text).

A Cool Loop
This image represents the supersonic flow patterns of relatively cold plasma (20 000 K) in the Sun's hot (2 Million K) atmosphere. It was recorded in ultraviolet light by the slit of the SUMER spectrometer, which is on the SOHO spacecraft. During the observation, the slit pointed to a fixed position above the solar limb, and recorded the intensity along the slit. The horizontal extent of the image corresponds to the observation time of almost three hours on 27 April 2003. The vertical extent of the image corresponds to more than eight times the size of the Earth ! The data were processed at UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory.
